  • Definition of Esports

The term ESPORT comes from ”electronic” and ”sports”(Scholz , 2019), but it was not always so, at the beginning of digital sports, the term used was ”Pro Gaming”, which comes from Professional (PRO), game (GAMING), which means professional game of console and PC video games. (Bischof , 2020)

Esports is a form of sport where the primary aspects of sport are facilitated by electronic systems, this definition means that “the inputs of players and teams”, as well as the outputs of the ESPORTS system are through human-computer interfaces”.(Hedlund , Fried , Smith , 2021)

In Esports there are two components, although the Players of the Esports teams are in the same physical space and can communicate face to face, the game itself is happening within an electronic system.

In other words, Esports players need to connect with a computer, device, or controller, which is electronically converted into video, audio and sensation of movement.

Wagner mentions that Esports is an area of sports activities in which people develop and train physical or mental skills in the use of information and communication technologies.(Wagner, n.d)

Esports began with Tennis For Two, the first game with entertainment purpose, designed by William Higingbortham in 1958. This game already had competitive aspects and with growing potential for visualizations. (Scholz , 2019),

Subsequently The Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Lab manages the first video game competition, the computer game Spacewar in 1972, the prize for the winner was a subscription to Rolling Stone Magazine. (Mendoza, 2020)
